Fightin' Whites + Documentary

First of all, I would highly recommend everyone watching the documentary "In Whose Honor?" Here's a clip that I found of the documentary http://youtube.com/watch?v=lEUl2keJK-w . The mascot article touched base with many things that the documentary talked about, but the documentary goes more in depth with how offending Native American mascots are in sports. For anyone who wants to see what the Fightin' Whites T-Shirts looked like I found the website which has them, as well as other items. http://www.cafepress.com/cp/store.aspx?s=fightinwhite

Wow! That clip was pretty intense. When you look at the fan traditions from that perspective, it really doesn't make me too proud to be a Chief's fan. You just don't realize how offensive that can be till you stop and hear some one who is being marginalized by speak about it. Also, the part in the clip about the heart beat and how it has been caricatured by whites was pretty sad. I never even considered that that beat could also be another stereotype.

The t-shirts cheered me up tho! We're gonna be the Fighting Whites for inter-mural ball next year! Get ready!

Those t-shirts are pretty awesome. Its definitely not the stereotype I would have thought of to represent our community truthfully. The most honest representation would have to be balding, middle-aged and overweight but it makes its point.

great post! thanks for putting the link up for those. I was wondering what they looked like after you talked about them in class. Their actually pretty funny and they make a good point. i particularly like the one with the redneck looking guy with the wheat stalk in his mouth. It's hard to think about this stuff because as a non-indian, I often overlook things that are offensive to them. Hopefully, I will recognize offensive images a little more easily.
